ChatGPT Maker OpenAI Goes Smaller and Cheaper With New AI Tech

OpenAI Unveils GPT-4o Mini: A Cost-Effective AI Model for Broad Accessibility

OpenAI, the pioneering force behind advanced artificial intelligence technologies, has introduced a new version of its widely acclaimed GPT-4 technology. The new model, named GPT-4o mini, is designed to be smaller, more efficient, and significantly more affordable, marking a pivotal shift in the AI industry toward more accessible and cost-effective solutions.

Affordable AI for All

On Thursday, OpenAI announced the release of GPT-4o mini, underscoring the company’s commitment to making artificial intelligence broadly accessible. GPT-4o mini is the most cost-efficient small model developed by OpenAI, aiming to democratize AI by reducing the financial barrier to entry. Priced at 15 cents per million input tokens and 60 cents per million output tokens, it is an order of magnitude more affordable than previous frontier models and more than 60% cheaper than GPT-3.5 Turbo.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated, “With GPT-4o mini, we’re bringing the power of advanced AI to a wider audience. This model will enable a broader range of applications by making intelligence much more affordable and accessible.”

Enhanced Performance and Capabilities

Despite its smaller size, GPT-4o mini delivers impressive performance. It achieves an 82% score on the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) benchmark, surpassing the performance of other small models such as Gemini Flash and Claude Haiku. GPT-4o mini also outperforms GPT-3.5 Turbo in chat preferences on the LMSYS leaderboard.

GPT-4o mini is designed to handle a broad spectrum of tasks with low cost and latency. It supports applications that require multiple model calls, large volumes of context, or real-time text responses. Currently, the model supports text and vision in the API, with plans to include support for text, image, video, and audio inputs and outputs in the future.

Multimodal and Multilingual Proficiency

GPT-4o mini excels in both textual intelligence and multimodal reasoning. It supports the same range of languages as GPT-4o and demonstrates superior performance in function calling, enabling developers to build applications that can fetch data or perform actions with external systems. The model’s long-context performance is also improved compared to GPT-3.5 Turbo, with a context window of 128K tokens and support for up to 16K output tokens per request.

Benchmark Achievements

GPT-4o mini has been rigorously evaluated across several key benchmarks:

  • Reasoning Tasks: Achieved 82.0% on MMLU, compared to 77.9% for Gemini Flash and 73.8% for Claude Haiku.
  • Math and Coding Proficiency: Scored 87.0% on MGSM (math reasoning) and 87.2% on HumanEval (coding performance), outperforming other small models.
  • Multimodal Reasoning: Demonstrated strong performance on MMMU, scoring 59.4%, compared to 56.1% for Gemini Flash and 50.2% for Claude Haiku.

Safety and Reliability

OpenAI prioritizes safety and reliability in its models. GPT-4o mini incorporates the same safety mitigations as GPT-4o, including pre-training filters for harmful content and post-training alignment using reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF). The model’s responses are further secured by the instruction hierarchy method, enhancing resistance to jailbreaks and prompt injections.

GPT-4o mini is now available in the Assistants API, Chat Completions API, and Batch API. It offers developers an affordable option to integrate advanced AI into their applications, with fine-tuning capabilities rolling out soon. ChatGPT users, including Free, Plus, and Team users, can access GPT-4o mini starting today, with Enterprise access following next week.

A Step Towards the Future

OpenAI’s release of GPT-4o mini represents a significant milestone in making AI technology more accessible and integrated into everyday digital experiences. The model’s affordability and enhanced capabilities pave the way for developers to build and scale powerful AI applications efficiently. As AI technology continues to evolve, OpenAI remains at the forefront, driving innovation and accessibility in the AI landscape.
