Samsung is not falling behind Apple. Some of the biggest news at the January 2024 Galaxy Unpacked event was the arrival of Samsung’s Galaxy AI. This exciting new technology puts artificial intelligence capabilities in the palm of your hand. Initially launched on the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy AI is now available on older phones, too.
Samsung has long been a player in AI, with AI-enabled voice control and interaction in its Bixby service. However, Galaxy AI takes things further, using advanced generative AI capabilities to create and process text and images.
Introducing Galaxy AI
Galaxy AI can respond to text prompts with helpful answers, similar to Google Gemini, OpenAI’s GPT-4, and Meta AI. These language skills make devices easier to use and unlock previously unreachable abilities. Galaxy AI can write messages, perform quick image searches, translate languages, and more.
One of the standout features of Galaxy AI is its multimodal input, which allows for information exchange through various methods. For example, you can ask Galaxy AI to create a table from an uploaded image. Galaxy AI can “see” photos, understand type-written commands, and use speech prompts to generate responses.
Samsung has partnered with Google to enhance Galaxy AI with Google’s Gemini Pro and Imagen 2, the latest and most advanced AI models. Galaxy AI consists of different-sized models, with the smallest running on your phone. For more complex tasks, larger models run in Google Cloud on Vertex AI, requiring an internet connection. The result is quick AI assistance that helps you create more content and get more done with less effort.
Galaxy AI enhances several Samsung apps to improve user experience. For instance, Samsung Keyboard offers translation features for every app, handling live translation of phone calls and messages. The interpreter splits the screen with one side flipped, enabling the phone to translate for the person speaking a different language.
Photo editing features allow you to quickly fix issues like shadows and reflections, change the position of objects, or remove them entirely. Notes can be summarized with a tap, and Magic Compose helps you write messages with AI assistance. Photomoji makes messages fun and personalized with custom emojis created from your photos.
Using Galaxy AI on Your Samsung Galaxy Phone
Galaxy AI works seamlessly, with photos automatically benefiting from generative AI enhancement for zoom levels and improved low-light pictures. Features like Edit Suggestion offer quick fixes for common photo issues. Galaxy AI’s Instant Slow-Mo, limited to the Samsung Galaxy S24 and S23 lineup, lets you press and hold any video to generate more frames. Generative Edit allows you to delete or move subjects in photos with a tap or a draw.
By long-pressing the home button, you can search Google for any image on your screen. If you see a Galaxy AI button near the bottom, tap it to access special features like creating custom wallpapers, reformatting notes, and summarizing web pages.
When Samsung first released Galaxy AI in early 2024, it was limited to the Samsung Galaxy 24 series. Now, it’s available on other phones, tablets, and earbuds, including:
- Samsung Galaxy S24 series
- Samsung Galaxy S23 series
- Samsung Galaxy S23 FE
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5
- Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series
- Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 and Buds 2 Pro

The Future of Mobile AI
Samsung Galaxy AI is set to revolutionize mobile technology. With AI Live Translate Call, users can have real-time translations during phone calls, making communication across languages easier than ever. This feature, integrated into the native call function, ensures privacy by keeping conversations on-device.
Coming early next year, Galaxy AI will bring us closer to a world where communication barriers dissolve, making interactions more productive and meaningful. This is AI changing the world and your life for the better.
“Mobile technology has an incredible power to enable connection, productivity, creativity, and more for people around the world, but until now, we haven’t seen mobile AI ignite that in truly meaningful ways,” said Wonjoon Choi, EVP and Head of R&D, Mobile eXperience Business. “Galaxy AI is our most comprehensive intelligence offering to date, and it will change how we think about our phones forever.”
